When evil is good

Written by Izibele Maloyi

An exchange between a hero and a villain once went as such:

Batman: Then why do you want to kill me?

Joker: Kill you? I don’t want to kill you! What would I do without you? No, you complete me.

This is an excerpt from Dark Night, a movie from the DC cinematic universe. The plot of the movie has the Joker disinterested in the typical setting where the villain hunts down the hero with intent to kill. Instead, the Joker sees Batman as his muse in his quest for chaos. This had me thinking: perhaps there are necessary evils that help us be the best versions of ourselves, whether or not we choose to acknowledge their presence.

These necessary evils are very important because without them, we stay rooted at the same level without growth. Think about rappers and their constant mention of their ‘haters’. Whether these so-called haters are real or live in the rappers’ heads, the rapper is constantly trying to reach greater heights to prove the enemy wrong. It’s a source of inspiration that keeps them on their tippy toes.

Everything bad that we go through helps us grow and be better. Everyone that tries to dim your light gives you enough motivation to bust through every wall formed against you. Yes, we’re dreamers and we have our very own desires, but I believe that a bigger driving force to our success is the burning desires to prove doubters wrong.

It is very important to be able to differentiate between necessary evil and the toxic kind of evil. Necessary evil can be a driving force, regardless of the intention of the instigator. On the other hand, toxic evil’s sole intention is to not only dim your light or slow your progression, but to crush your soul. Toxicity exists only to kill; necessary evil can be a good supply of inspiration.

We all feed off of energies and vibrations, and those energies are not always pure and rosy. It’s undeniable that we sometimes relish having the challenge that comes with unnecessary evil. It is comforting to know that you’re the topic of conversation to the ‘haters’; it’s definitely a sign that you’re doing something worth paying attention to, a compliment for all the efforts you put into growing your personal brand.

Now, do not get me wrong, I am not at all saying everyone should hi-five all the people they suspect of being their haters. I am saying, rather, we all need to personally acknowledge the role they play in our state of being. We need to learn how to take advantage of all the negative energies that come our way, and make the energies work for us.

Necessary evil gives us a clear picture of what our limits are, and fires us up enough to leapfrog those limits.

There is a lot to be achieved when we embrace and take advantage of what is around us.

Call me crazy, but I actually believe that we all need all the necessary evil we can get, to get us off the lazy and complacency trains we have been on for a while.
