With seven days left to the completion of the 21-day national lockdown announced by president Cyril Ramaphosa two weeks ago, a two-week extension was announced by the president on Thursday night.
The nation waited eagerly to listen to president Ramaphosa address the nation about the measures that government continues to take to curb the spread of the coronavirus, as he was scheduled to speak at 8pm on a live broadcast.
Upon his arrival, the president expressed his appreciation to South Africans for accepting 21-day confinement to their homes, although it was not easy. The president went on to highlight that the measures taken to slow down the spread of the deadly virus in South Africa were indeed working, as the daily infections since the announcement of the initial lockdown had decreased drastically from 42% to 4%.
Ramaphosa then made the announcement that the lockdown would be extended by an additional two weeks, until the end of April. All the lockdown regulations would remain intact until the end of the extended lockdown.
