Free and unlimited online education during lockdown

Different organisations have joined forces to provide free online learning for school pupils after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a 21-day national lockdown due to the ongoing spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The lockdown has forced many to stay inside their homes, as adults are now working remotely and students have their classes online.

WorksheetCloud Live Lessons on  Thursday became some among the available online classes, where lessons are being provided freelyfor pupils of Grades 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Thembani Mashabela (23) who is a concerned citizen agrees with this new method of teaching, which is said to be an everyday, unlimited live-streamed online classroom.

“Most kids have access to smart phones and tablets. So with the help of active parents, they will be able to understand and use this system,” says Mashabela.

Although this might be a good method for students to catch up on their school work and to obtain study tips, it has, however, raised concerns for some South African citizens, especially the less fortunate.

Sibusiso Nkosi (25) says online lessons will only be beneficial to learners that come from families that are financially well-off. It would be good if these live learning lessons were remote free because some learners will not have the necessary facilities to access the internet.

WorksheetCloud focuses primarily on Mathematics, English and Natural Sciences. Additional grades will be added in due course.

Nteboheng Sekabate (23) is more concerned about the less fortunate learners whose parents will not be able to afford data, as well as the comprehension of pupils whohave different needs.

“Every leaner has a different cognitive and learning speed, so crucial subjects such as Maths and Science need classroom-based learning for them to fully understand what they are being taught and for them to be able to ask questions in a way that the teacher will be able to help them understand,” she explained.

Learners are required to register or to add information such as email addresses. This is to make these lessons easily accessible and hassle-free. The online classroom commenced on Thursday.
